During the drafting stage of writing, a student develops a more cohesive text and explores their topic, directed by purpose, audience, genre, and content. Drafting helps students to expand upon, clarify, and modify their initial plans and ideas. These charts can help them organize the writer’s content into a meaningful sequence or flow. These charts are divided into two levels. The Four Square is for beginner to average writers. The Six Square can be used with average and above writers. Charts can be used at the beginning of a writing exercise in order to generate ideas and organize content. They can also be used after a draft has been generated in order to make sure all components have been developed well. Writing is a process. It can be different for each writer.
